Tips for Caregivers
When babies cry:
- Sometimes babies just cry!
It’s perfectly normal for a baby to cry for 2-4 hours a day. They may be hungry, need a diaper change, need cuddling or may simply cry for no reason. When the stress level rises, it's time for a time out. Try this: - Place the baby in a crib and walk away.
- Take a few minutes for yourself in another room.
- Ask a trusted friend, neighbor or relative to watch your child while you take a break or a nap.
When toddlers have tantrums:
- Toddlers can’t always express their feelings with words. The way they let you know if they are tired or upset is with a temper tantrum. Try this:
- Distract the child and redirect his or her attention to something else.
- Put the child in a time out so everyone can calm down.
Potty training points:
- Every child is different when it comes to potty training. Some are ready at age 1, others not until age 3 or older. It can take over a year to complete potty training. But remember, accidents will happen (even up to age 6)!
- Never scold or punish a child for an accident. Children do not intend to have accidents and accidents do not mean something is wrong with the child. Children get distracted and forget to use the potty.
- If there are lots of accidents, go back to diapers and try again later.
Let us help you—The Paloma Mission
The Paloma Mission is a new home visitation initiative offered to mothers delivering at CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital. Families requiring on-going education and support will be referred to The Precious Minds, New Connections Program funded by the Kronkosky Charitable Foundation.
Finding the Right Child Care
When you can’t be with your children, it is important to find a safe environment for them in the care of a responsible adult. The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) is an excellent resource. You can search the Texas DFPS Child Care listings.
