CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Children’s Hospital to benefit from Titanium Rib Foundation October 30 Run/Walk Event
(SAN ANTONIO, TX – October 15) – The Titanium Rib Foundation is hosting a Halloween Costume 5K Walk and Run on Saturday, October 30, 2010, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Woodlawn Park, 1103 Cincinnati Street.

The event is being held to support the CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Children’s Hospital Spinal & Thoracic Treatment And Research (STTAR) Center.

Food, live music, and a car show are all part of this family-friendly event. To register, visit www.active.com and search “titanium rib walk/run.” Registration is $15.00 for ages 12 and over, $10.00 for children ages three to 11, and includes a t-shirt (while supplies last), a food coupon, and cupcake for children. Registration is free for those who have two sponsors with a $30.00 minimum.

“This is a great opportunity for families to engage in a healthy activity while supporting a local program at CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Children’s Hospital that has saved the lives of hundreds of children from around the world. We appreciate the support from our friends at the Titanium Rib Foundation and their efforts to create awareness about this important medical procedure,” said Marcy Doderer, CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Children’s Hospital Vice President/Administrator.

CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Children's Hospital is the site of the first titanium rib implant surgery which took place in 1989 and served as the primary location for the FDA's multi-center feasibility study. It was here that Dr. Robert Campbell (orthopedics) and Dr. Melvin Smith (general surgery) invented the first Vertical Expandable Prosthetic Titanium Rib (VEPTR) device and began the “The Titanium Rib Project.” Since then, the procedure has evolved and flourished, and CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Children’s Hospital remains at the program’s national forefront. Patients from around the world travel to San Antonio to be treated with the VEPTR device.

Mechanically, the VEPTR device works through telescoping rods, often attached from rib-to-rib, or rib-to-illiac crest (hip bones). This works to stabilize the lung cavity. Prior to this breakthrough technology, children with these problems usually did not survive to adulthood. This technology represents the first advancement in spine deformity treatment in over 40 years.

“Because children with VEPTR implants often need surgery every six months to expand the titanium rib to account for growth, funds raised from the October 30 event will help offset the huge financial burden on the families of these special children who must travel to San Antonio multiple times per year for treatment,” said Judy Nettel, Titanium Rib Foundation Board Member.
To date, over 500 children and their families have been given this gift of increased life-expectancy thanks to this revolutionary medical procedure, CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Children’s Hospital, and the Titanium Rib Foundation.
